General Rules for using the CNTech Cleanrooms

1)      Access to the CNTech cleanrooms is restricted to those who have completed an orientation session with the lab manager. This includes an orientation to the Kegonsa Research Campus, getting a radiation badge, scheduling SRC safety training, and an introduction to cleanroom practices.  All visitors and new users must contact the lab manager before they enter the cleanroom for the first time, even if they will just be observers of someone else's work, and even if they already use some other cleanroom with stricter rules.

2)      Use of equipment in the CNTech cleanrooms is restricted to people who have been trained to use it.  Training must be conducted by a staff member, or someone specifically designated for this training session by a staff member.  It is not OK to use equipment that another student shows you how to use, even if its use seems simple.  Contact the lab manager to schedule training.

3)      All chemicals brought into the CNTech cleanrooms must be approved by the lab manager.  This includes chemicals that you think are already in use in the lab.  To bring a chemical into the lab, you must:
        - Discuss the chemical, and the way you intend to use it, with the lab manager before you buy it;
        - Provide an MSDS to the lab manager and to the SRC safety officer before the chemical arrives;
        - Inform the lab manager when you bring the material into the cleanroom, and discuss how to store it.

4)      Materials that produce particles are not allowed in the cleanroom.  Such materials include paper and cardboard, but many other things can produce particles too.  If you need to bring a new material into the cleanroom, contact the lab manager first.

5)      Only certain procedures are permitted.  If what you want to do is not in the Process Guidelines document, or was not covered in your orientation, contact the lab manager before you do it.  You must do this even if it is obvious to you that what you want to do is safe, and not much different from what everyone else is doing.

6)      Proper cleanroom attire is required.  This means a full cleanroom suit, cleanroom boots, and gloves.  You must also wear shoes with full toe covering - no sandals.  Protective glasses or goggles must be worn when working with chemicals or with radiation sources, and should be worn at other times as well.  Certain processes, such as those involving acids, require additional protective clothing.  Talk to the lab manager.

            Note that there are cleanroom suits for visitors, and others that are assigned to regular users.

7)      Play well with others.  Many people share the cleanroom, so you should make an effort not to interfere with their work.  Clean up after yourself.  Dispose of your waste properly.  If you don't know where to put something away, or how to dispose of a chemical, contact the lab manager.  Check with other users as you work, to see if either of you is doing something that might affect the other's results.  Schedule equipment fairly.  Don't use other people's stuff without asking.  If the equipment you're using has shutdown instructions, follow them.
