Changhan's research interests are in thoretical modeling, optics, system integration and biological applications of silicon fabrication technology, specifically, biological lithography. Changhan's advisor is Franco Cerrina. His current research investigates the theory, experiment and implementation of light-directed DNA synthesis.

DNA synthesis modeling was deveoped to predict the distribution and amounts of DNA species on a DNA microarray, and the modeling was verified with experiments. To conduct the experiments, Changhan worked with a post doctoral fellow and Franco Cerrina to build the second generation Maskless Array Synthesizer, which has an additional "image locking" subsystem. Changhan is now looking for methods to reduce sequencing errors in DNA synthesis using modeling and experiments.
